Royan – Day 7

Continue your discovery of our region by going down a little further into the Estuary.

The Estuary Park

Located in Saint-Georges-de-Didonne, the Parc de l’Estuaire faces the mouth of the Gironde estuary. Perched on a cliff and nestled in the coastal forest of Suzac, this sensitive and protected natural area offers its visitors (young and old) a playful discovery of nature on their own or in the company of enthusiastic nature guides. The Parc de l’Estuaire offers the public an opportunity to discover the local natural heritage through different visiting areas: the exhibition area, the watchtower which offers an exceptional panorama of the ocean, the estuary and the Suzac forest at 55m above sea level. And the discovery trail from which you can walk along the forest trail to discover the dune forest of Suzac.

The caves of Regulus

Arriving at Meschers sur Gironde, you will discover limestone cliffs and troglodytic habitats. Located on the right bank of the Estuary, the municipal caves of Regulus are an exceptional historical heritage. Originally natural, they have been enlarged by man and used as a refuge, habitat and hiding place. During the guided tour of the caves (approx. 45 minutes) you will learn more about the origin of the name and how it has evolved over time.

Talmont sur Gironde

Leaving Meschers sur Gironde, it would be a shame not to extend your visit a few kilometres to the small village of Talmont sur Gironde. Situated on a rocky promontory overlooking the Gironde Estuary, Talmont has kept its original Bastide layout, built in 1284 by Edward I of Aquitaine, and as you stroll through its narrow streets, you won’t be able to miss the church of Sainte-Radegonde which dominates the village. This tour promises a stroll, craftsmanship and authenticity.

The Fâ site

Why not continue your day on a journey to discover the Gallo-Roman world. The archaeological site of Le Fâ welcomes young and old alike for an immersion into life in Gallo-Roman times. Through the guided tours that will be offered, you will be able to discover and understand the Gallo-Roman city and attend the animations in the shoes of a Roman. in the form of presentations: “Daily Life”, “Gladiators”, “Roman Army” and “Roman Engineering”. On certain occasions, it is possible to practice! Excavations, little legionnaires and ancient clothes for an immersion in the daily life of our Gallo-Roman ancestors.
