grotte de régulus Charente

Caves of Régulus at Meschers-Sur-Gironde

During your holiday at camping le Royan in Charente-Maritime, visit the Caves of Régulus, a municipal troglodyte site. Overlooking the Gironde estuary and carved into the limestone cliffs, the “holes” of Meschers welcome you in an exceptional setting. Originally natural, the caves of Meschers were enlarged by man to become a troglodytic habitat in the 19th century. The name Régulus comes from a French ship which, under Napoleon, was chased by the English and scuttled off Meschers.
